Removal of the back panel reveals three key components; the hard drive, RAM and wireless module. These components can fairly warm so it makes absolute sense to have them placed just a thin aluminum veneer away from the outside world.
As you can see, the hard drive in this one is a 'netbook standard' 2.5" Western Digital 160GB. The RAM however looks to be a 1GB of regular non-branded DDR2. This netbook, like almost all mobile PCs, uses a smaller sized SO-DIMM RAM module. The wireless module is a Realtek RTL8187SE wireless card. Again, all very standard.
Unlike just about every other component in this machine, the hard drive is a genuine branded device. This is because only five companies in the world have the know-how to make a hard drive; Western Digital, Seagate (who also own Maxtor), Hitachi (who bought IBM's HD division) Toshiba (who bought Fujitsu's HD technology) and Samsung.
Here's the reverse side of the trackpad and right and left click buttons. I imagine these are pretty much standardized to work on variety of designs. Here you can see the aluminum cooling plate that separates the mainboard from the keyboard. In a thin design like this quite a lot of heat is will be blown out of the device using fans.
Above you can see the mainboard which contains, among other things, the actual Intel Atom processor and it's chipset. The Atom CPU is the smaller on on the left. The larger one is the south bridge ICH7-M, also known as the I/O Controller Hub 7-M, this gives you I/O such as USB and storage and audio etc. The 945GSE north bridge is in the middle, providing the main 533 MHz front-side memory bus and Intel's integrated GMA 950 graphics. Conclusions:
It's certainly interesting to see how even with a product like a netbook, there is a great deal modularization going on. The wireless card, trackpad speakers etc can all be used in a number of designs, not specific to this one. This is all pushing towards a greater commoditization of mobile PCs, helping to get from design to shop to shelves faster and lowering prices. [Source] Related articles
