Ok, so you thought that the iPad is still the world’s favorite tablet? Well! Yes, you’re quite right in thinking so, but, the trend might change in a few months, because Android seems to be slowly taking over the tablet market. At least that is what recent studies have suggested.
A study conducted by Research Analytics has suggested that Apple’s share has shrunk to 58% in 2011, from 68% of the previous year. The research showed that the tablet market had grown by a whopping 260% last year to 66.9 million units as consumers preferred buying tablet PCs over netbooks. Android’s market share rose from 29% to 39%. As expected, Microsoft’s tablets occupied only 1% of the market, and the rest 2% was occupied by RIM’s Playbook and others of its likes.
The advantage that Android has over the iOS is that it is being distributed by a large number of brands and at all price levels, making it increasingly affordable. The OS has a mass appeal, why, it’s the favorite of our dear Shanzhai as well, with most of their tablets carrying the OS.
Will the scales drift towards the iPad once again when the iPad 3 is launched in March? We’ve just got to wait and watch!
