India has started to make it a habit to attempt self-reliance in all fields. Now the country has started the ball rolling on making its own computer operating system and anti-virus product. Why not … Microsoft operating systems have (in part) been developed in India for years!
India’s program, which was announced in October 2010, is motivated by concerns over the vulnerability of security systems in the country. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) have set up software development centers in Bangalore and Delhi for the project. The project will be lead by DRDO in partnership with software companies in and around Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi and also academic institutions like the Indian institute of Science, Bangalore and IIT, Chennai.
India is currently using operating systems developed by Western countries. The Indian government, meanwhile, is uneasy about foreign technology and hardware . There have been several reports about the Indian government’s IT infrastructure being targeted. The possibility of Internet and cyber-attacks, they believe, would be reduced if India had its own OS to provide security for sensitive establishments like banks and defense groups.
Despite objections to the idea, the Indian government doesn’t want to shy away from it . Although it was not a big success the ‘BOSS’(Bharat Operating System Solutions), a free and open source computer operating system developed in 2008 by the National Resource Centre for free/Open Source software in India, it provides an example of what can be done In the event of an accident or terriorist attack, having home grown system with a closed source code would secure data and limit the threat.
Dr.V K Saraswat, Scientific Advisor to the Defense Minister and Director General of DRDO, said “There are many gaps in our software areas; particularly we don’t have our own operating system. So, in today’s world where you have tremendous requirements of security on whatever you do… economy, banking and defence… it’s essential that you need to have an operating system.”
Although the new OS will initially be developed for defense applications, it may gradually be available to the commercial sector.
… why not, making your own operating system is the flavor of the month, with China Mobile, China Unicom and HP all announcing or extending plans for their own OS.
