smartphone, India, handheld computing, Indian mobile marketWhile Smartphones started out in India, as they did elsewhere, in the business segment, but many of today’s smartphone buyers are everyday consumers. The smartphone is now a must-have techno-toy. In India, even in low income or ‘slum’ areas, where there isn’t even a reliable mains power supply, the smartphone is as popular as anything else. Why do people, who never download an app or surf the web on their smartphone, prefer them over basic or mid-level mobile handsets?

When you poke into their relationship with the smartphone you can see that the purpose of a smartphone changes according to the person who uses it. To some it is a business tool, to others a leisure device, to most, it’s just a way to keep in touch with their buddies. For some users it’s easier to use than a desktop  PC and it integrates all their needs in one device.

But for an average Indian user, the smartphone never means access to the Internet and it doesn’t represent a handheld computing experience. A smartphone, for a low income earner, who has never had access to a PC or digital camera, is a truly an enchanting device that can perform a lot more than they ever expected. The user doesn’t need to know how to use a computer to be able to use a smartphone but it provides everything that they can get from a land-line phone, radio, portable music player, gaming device, digital camera, etc, all in one affordable handheld device.

The highly competitive Indian mobile market has decreased the price tag of smartphones. The average selling price of an entry level smartphone has dropped to Rs.5000 (USD 112) to Rs.12000 (USD 270) by 2010. Local Indian brands like Karbonn, Maxx, Zen (etc), and Shanzhai products, have made it possible for a much broader cross-section of society to own their own smartphone.

When the media talks about smartphones it’s most often about new apps and productivity features, but in countries like India there are a growing number of users who enjoy their smartphones just as much without apps or Internet connectivity. They can afford the smartphone handset, but not the 3G connectivity or the apps … it provides an all-in-one way to own a digital camera, MP3 player, mobile phone, gaming device, etc … truly, a ‘smart’ phone purchase.
