It seems that Vodafone is the latest mobile communications giant to succumb to the irresistible lure of the
shanzhai business strategy. Vodafone has adopted “king of shanzhai” MediaTek platforms for 2 of their 8 new branded phones just announced.
The MediaTek based phones from Vodafone are a low end Vodafone 340a camera phone and also a Vodafone 541 low cost touchscreen device.
Vodafone 541 The '2G Touch' tablet device has a 2.4 inch QVGA colour screen, supports finger touch UI and features a 1.3 megapixel camera with video recorder, SMS and MMS messaging services, FM radio and WAP mobile internet browsing with more besides. The device will be available in black and pink, followed later by white and red. The phone will be available on pre-pay in Europe. While a 2G touch device might not thrill your mobile phone uber-enthusiast, it will certainly cheer investors in MediaTek who apparently might just surpass their own 3rd quarter estimates of NTD33.7 billion (about US$1 billion) in sales. –
