In my last post, I declared that Beautiful Home Widgets is the top widget for Android; I guess I will have to eat my words now. I hadn’t heard of the Battery Widget then.
This is a small widget that takes up a tiny spot on your Android home screen. Tap it to enlarge it and you will see its actual function. The enlarged Battery Widget gives you one click access to Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and display settings.
The widget can be downloaded from the Android Market, just like an Android app, and it’s free. Unlike other apps, you can’t access widgets from the Application Menu, you have to add them to the home screen. Tap and hold the home screen to open the ‘Add to home screen’ window and select the Battery Widget.
This will add a small battery icon on the home screen displaying the battery status of your Android device as a percentage.
Tapping the battery icon will give you a detailed view of apps that might be eating up the battery life, like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and display settings. The applications highlighted in green are currently active and those in red are inactive. The widget controls act as a toggle to enable/disable each them, by simply tapping on them.
The display option is clever. This takes you to the Sound and display settings of your Android device where you can adjust brightness, orientation, screen timeout, and volume (etc).
Since you can’t see the battery percentage in the notification area on Android, this widget is quite handy.
