To get to application shortcuts you normally have to go to the Home screen or the Menu, but not if you have Bar Control installed. Bar Control allows you to create shortcuts for your most often used applications directly in the notifications area.
Install it from Android Marketplace and it will open a list of all applications installed on your device.

Select an application and choose an icon for it from a huge list.

After you do that the icon will appear in the notification area and you’ll be able to access the application by tapping on the icon, and also from the notification dropdown menu.
Unfortunately, the notification area looks a lot more cluttered when you add application shortcuts to it. Regular default icons like unread mail and a low battery notification end up being less noticeable. So my advice would be to use Bar Control to add just 3-4 icons of your most used apps only.
