You can’t quite get an encyclopedia for your smartphone but you can get apps like this one which equip you with a world of information … in this case, quite literally!
World Factbook, which is based on the CIA’s World Factbook, and therefore contains hypothetically reliable data , contains the lowdown on major and minor countries. This app is free on the Android Market. It runs on Android 1.5 and up.
You can browse by the name of the country, a particular region, or just allow the app to randomly pick a country and give you the information about it.
When you click on the name of a country you get a sub-menu where you can choose to find out about the geography, economy, transportation, people, government, issues, etc.
The option to browse by region is handy as it puts the countries into a regional context; browsing and reading the information in this way will give you a good overview of that region and the countries in it.
