QR codes are 2D patterns that contain encoded information. They are being used by Android app developers to store information about their apps, instead of listing contact details, URL, etc. So if, for example, you’re looking for an Android app for a calendar, you search with Google on a desktop PC and find a website about the app or a review about it. If you see a QR code there you can grab your Android phone or device, scan the code as it appears on your desktop’s monitor, and it will then open Android Market on your phone or device at the download page for that app. Get it?!

QR codes are 2D bar codes or short cryptic codes that can store contact information, event details, email addresses, geo location, URLs phone numbers, text messages and even contact details. To make use of them on an Android device you need an app that can get the encrypted info out of them.

The Barcode Scanner app can translate the details hidden in these codes using the camera built into your Android device.

It’s available for download from the Android Marketplace and it’s free. Launch the app and it will display the picture in front of the camera of your device with a red line in the middle.

When you’ve found an app on your desktop (or laptop) that you want, if you see a QR code, you’re all set to use the scanner. This is an example of a QR code being used on an app site: http://www.tunewiki.com/apps/tunewiki-android.aspx. Scan the barcode (on your monitor) with the camera on your Android device by placing the QRcode exactly in the middle of the red line.

Once the code is detected, it will give a beep  or vibrate (this can be modified in the settings) and show the relevant details like the URL or text message hidden in the QR code. If it’s a URL it will give you the option to open the code in a browser or to share details via email or SMS. If a geo location is hidden in the Q code, it can locate the place with Google maps and in the case of Android apps, it can open the application in the Android Marketplace.

It can also detect simple barcodes in 1D format to specify  product details, UPC, and EAN numbers, etc. Books can be searched as well by barcode, which will lead you to their official download website or to Google Books.

You are also allowed to share the barcode details with your contacts, across applications and bookmarking sites as well.

Just point the camera at the code and find all the information it contains.
