WolframAlpha is a search engine, but unlike Google and Yahoo, that gives results based on keywords. WolframAlpha gives numbers-based answers, including answers to actual math equations, and also stats and figures relating to the term that is being searched.
WolframAlpha has a free website that you can access in any browser and they’ve also now Android apps, a free Quicklaunch version and a full version for USD 1.99, both available from the Android Market.
The WolframAlpha interface is pretty simple: it contains a search bar and nothing else. Type the query in the box and you will get the result more like a numerical data of what you asked.
You can ask anything that can be answered through computation. WolframAlpha doesn’t search the web, it searches through data that Wolfram Alpha has added to their database.
“We aim to collect and curate all objective data; implement every known model, method and algorithm; and make it possible to compute whatever can be computed about anything. Our goal is to build on the achievements of science and other systematizations of knowledge to provide a single source that can be replied on by everyone for definitive answers to factual queries”
There is some interaction with the web though. For example, if you search the term weather WolframAlpha will automatically looks up your local host and display the weather result for your locality.
The results are often in graphs, tables etc.
The app is obviously very straightforward to use and damned handy. If you want raw data, stats and figures, WolframAlpha can be provided them even faster that Google … and who doesn’t want that in an app?!
