When you can’t find your Android phone, what do you do? You grab another phone and dial your number, right? But what happens if your phone is in Silent Mode, switched off, or worse still, if it’s stolen? Here’s an app that will provide you some relief, it’s called ‘Where’s My Droid’.

The app is free on the Android Market and requires Android 1.6 or up. A pro version of the app is also available for USD 3. It has some extra features like the ability to remote wipe all the data on the phone and SD card using a landline to activate the app. The pro version also includes an option to customize the ringtone.

But back to the free version. You first need to set up a word or phrase that you then use to SMS to your lost Android phone. Receiving this SMS will cause the phone to increase the ringer volume making it easier for you to find.

As you can see from the screenshot above, there are a few options for what you want the phone to do if it receives that special SMS from you.

You also need to set up a word or phrase to activate the phone’s GPS in case of theft, so that the app will notify you about the location of the phone (in latitude and longitude), and also give a link to show the phone’s location on Google Maps. Now that’s truly handy.

Another nifty option that the app offers is that you can set it up to send the notification to an email or phone number, in case the SIM card or phone number gets changed. This option is still in its Beta version though, and might not work on some devices.

If you are absent-minded and constantly living with the fear of losing your Android phone, this is a great app to have.
