The major shortcoming of Android devices in my opinion is that they don’t have a proper in-built file manager and you have to struggle a bit when you want to track down a file or folder. The only way to get rid of this issue is to depend on a 3rd party file manager app. There are a lot to choose from but I’ve found that the ES File Explorer is a good option because the interface is easy and it combines the functions of a file manager, task killer and PC synching app together.
The ES File Explorer manages all the files on your device and SD card. The most peculiar features of the app are that you can access LAN and FTP files, and you can select multiple files or folders at once, just like you would be used to on your PC. It also supports a grid or a list view, depending on how you like to see your stuff.
The ES File Explorer app is free on the
Android Market and it needs Android version 1.5 or above.
The ES File Explorer has a really clean interface with really rather nice graphics for such a functional app.
When you open the app it shows six tabs arranged horizontally across the top of the screen.
The first icon is to toggle between SD card storage and internal storage. With the second icon you can select multiple files or folders.

The third icon in the menu is to search for files.

You can narrow down a search by selecting to search just All Video/Audio Files, All image Files, Search Runnable Apps or Search Zip Files.

Alternatively, you can search files by title. Tap on ‘Search any file by Name’ to activate this.
To exit the app double click the fourth icon or ‘back’ button of your device.

It took me some time to find out where all the extra functions like task killer, security manager, bookmark manager (etc) were hiding in this app as the entire menu bar is not scrollable! Then I saw a small swipe bar on the green line below the fifth icon; it’s cumbersome because you should be really careful while you scroll over the small tab.

The tab gives access to the Help Center, Task Manager, App Manager, Security Manager, Bookmark Manager and SD Card Analyst.

In App Manager, tap on an app name and select ‘Switch To’ to open it or ‘Detail’ to see info about the app or uninstall it.

Long press on a file or folder to get the ‘Operations’. As a file manager, files can be copied, edited, renamed, searched, make short cut, compress and added to a bookmark list.
The Security Manager and Bookmark Manager add-ons for this app have to be downloaded separately.
Finally, the most convenient thing about this app is that you can explore the files on your PC using Bluetooth or WLAN. Files can be copied to and from your PC. This is fantastic if you’re wanting to share music, video and photo files between your devices.
