China's Sky Garden apartments, the hanging gardens of Qinhuangdao

The proposed Sky Garden apartment blocks of Qinhuangdao are further proof that they don't tend to do things by halves in today's modern China. Architect, or urban designer if you prefer, Moshe Safdie was asked to put his mind to somehow creating a garden paradise that could comfortably house 2,200 people, each in their own private penthouse. No easy task. The result, if these images are any indication, is pretty stunning.

Aptly named Golden Dream Bay, the design was selected last year and is scheduled for completion sometime in 2014. It's based around a staircase style design that basically gives all tenants their own garden area overlooking the scenic beach surroundings of Qinhuangdao, a notable tourist recreation area.

An apparent deconstruction of the skyscraper towerblock apartments that are fast becoming synonymous with China's skyline, Safdie has four triangular structures linked in a chain by skywalks. Personal gardens are joined by swimming pools and public gardens above parking decks on 16th and 30th floors. There's also a boardwalk connecting the four structures with the beach and local shopping areas.

China is country that continues to defy convention. In areas such as green technology, urban development and architectural innovation China is emerging as genuine global leader. The Golden Dream Bay will perhaps stand as a monument to China's ambitions, much as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon did in ancient Mesopotamia.
