HTC Diamond2 HTC Clone
The smartphone clone above (right) has just appeared in
shanzhai markets. You can see from the comparison that visually, it’s a great copy of the new HTC Diamond2 even down to the “HTC” logo on the top left. What’s more interesting though is the hardware configuration the clone claims to have which, if true, makes it a better spec’d device than the HTC phone.
Here’s a better look at the screen showing the hardware configuration. According to the list it features a Marvell PXA310 chip clocked at 1GHz, and 2GB of DDR memory.

Now, leaving aside why a smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1 (which is also what the HTC Diamond2 runs) would need 2GB of RAM, a quick glance at the Marvell product pages reveals that the PXA310 chip, which is indeed targeted at 3G phones and PDAs, only runs at up to 624MHz. So, unless the shanzhai manufacturer has done some fancy overclocking, the 1GHz clock speed seems doubtful (the HTC phone itself runs a Qualcomm MSM7200A chip at 528MHz, so potentially the clone is still packing more raw processing power).
Other features between the two phones are similar with both sporting 3.2” WVGA screens and identical dimensions and weights.
Western Opportunity Analysis:
With the HTC Diamond2 receiving very favorable reviews from most media sources, it was always bound to be a popular product. Any clone able to offer similar looks and performance for a more attractive price is also going to demand attention. Obviously the HTC logo would have to go to sell in the West, but if the specs are to be believed this clone should stack up very favorably against the original.

Conclusions:
The jury’s out until we can get our hands on one of these to test the implementation of the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS and get a closer look at the hardware, but it does look promising.
