Here's a classy piece of kit from shanzhai-ville that offers us the first glimpse of Google Android on a non-legit Western cell phone product. Taking inspiration from the HTC Hero, the TigerG3 brings some much needed and highly anticipated Android action to the markets of the Mainland.

We've seen some classy smart phone clones on this blog since we began our shanzhai adventure, including a slew of iPhone clones and even a few Blackberry inspired designs. This is the first HTC cell phone clone to get our attention. The TigerG3 features a 3.2 inch 16:9 240 x 400 pixel widescreen display, dual SIM cards support, a 2GB T-flash card as default with a possible 4GB expansion, support for 3GP, MP4, 3GP/MP4 full-screen video playback, 1.3 megapixel cam, supports both 900/1800MHz frequencies and features built-in Wi-Fi.

Dimensions are quite interesting with the TigerG3 measuring 113mm x 58mm x 13.5mm compared to the HTC Hero's 112 mm x 56.2 mm x 14.35 mm. So the Tiger is slightly longer and wider yet surprisingly a mite thinner. In terms of weight the Tiger weighs in a 107 grams which is considerably lighter than the Hero's 135 grams. HHmm... could be some kind of discrepancy there.

The TigerG3 went on sale yesterday and retails for 950RMB or approx 140 USD.

Western Opportunity Analysis:

Most of the smart phones we cover on this blog tend to have the same the same look and feel as the originals that inspire them, but they also tend to revert to the tried and trusted MTK software stack for it their OS needs. This was the case yesterday when we looked at the latest Blackberry clone. It was Blackberry on the outside but not on the inside, and this is understandably so; the Blackberry OS is a proprietary piece of software that will remain exclusive to Blackberry and forever out of reach for the shanhzai.

This is not the case here with the Hero clone which is of course loaded with Google's Android platform. Android is based on the Linux kernel and is developed by the Open Handset Alliance and licensed under the Open Source GPL v2 license. While this means it's free for shanzhai manufacturers to use it's actually not as easy to deploy as you might first expect. Android is designed to work on the ARM processors that power our cell phones, but there are many other pieces to the puzzle that are needed to make it work. In fact it takes a great deal of customization within the OS to get it implemented on any given ARM SOC, indeed these SOCs or System on Chips are seldom ever the same.

I'm assuming then that the TigerG3 and its Google Android OS is either the product of some really hard work to implement Android, or it uses the exact same processor platform that the original HTC Hero does. My money is on the latter scenario. But hey, if you have any insight, please chip in with a comment.

Conclusions:

I wasn't a huge fan of the HTC Dream when it first arrived though overall they do make attrctive handsets. Android too was not quite the finished the artcile it is fast becoming with the release of cupcake. For the price, it's hard to find fault with the TigerG3. Looks solid. Where do I queue?

I checked with a few Chinese resellers. It is not actually Android OS on the phone.

Here is a different one. It comes with WinMo, but at time of order you can request to have Android installed on it.

OK, I am holding a WG3 and would like to know if I should send it back. I want the android OS for obvious reasons, does it or does it not run on android? Is there away I can check the OS on the phone or with TKE explorer or another program?

Linden,

I strongly doubt its got Android at this stage on it. I'm pretty sure Mediatek who makes the platform hasn't officially finished porting Android yet or we would have heard more about it.

Cheers,

Tai-Pan

@ linden how much did you pay for the phone? I think I would want one for myself... How does the UI feel?
