Samsung's NC10 netbook is considered by many to the ultimate netbook product. For example Sascha from netbooknews.com has kept an NC10 as his closest companion for the last year or so and considers it to be the perfect example of a netbook - and this guy is considered the netbook king! The E-NC10 from imore is in all fairness a vague attempt to replicate the sleek good looks of Samsung's famous 10.2 incher, and when you consider that it has a DVD drive stashed inside it's bulkier chassis the comparisons tend to wane somewhat.

The E-NC10 is no dead ringer for the Samsung that inspired it, almost like they set about designing a clone and thought, hey why not be creative? And while adding a DVD drive to a netbook might seem like a strange idea to many of us they are still handy on occasion. So should we even call this device a netbook, I mean once you get past 10 inch screen sizes, adding an optical drive kind of makes it more of a notebook than a netbook. The E-NC20 features a 11.6 inch 1366 x 768 pixel screen which is considered to be the very uppermost echelons of netbookdom, so perhaps what really marks this guy as a netbook more than a notebook, is the Intel Atom processor that powers it.

The quintessentially netbooky Atom N270 CPU teams up with its Intel 945GSE chipset buddy again here, so even if it looks like a notebook, it won't really perform like one. And it is from here that the other deeply familiar specifications fall into place. You've guessed it; 1GB of DDR2, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n wireless, Ethernet, 3-in-1 card reader yada yada, although you're only getting two USB ports, probably due to the inclusion of that DVD drive!

Prices vary according to what kind of drive you actually want; a CD-ROM (yes they still make them) version is a mere 1999 RMB or around 290 bucks, while the high-end DVD burning type is a princely 2599 RMB or closer to 380 dollars US.

Conclusions:

So why spoil a perfectly good NC10 clone with a whopping great optical drive? Well, it's highly probable that some consumers have been asking for it, and after all this is not the first netbook-ish product that we've seen with one. If there is a pinch of demand for a feature, the shanzhai will go ahead and provide it. To be fair I have actually sat down at my netbook and wished it had a DVD drive once or twice in the past. We're not completely out of the spinning disk woods yet, that's for sure. When device manufacturers finally get around to giving you a driver or recovery USB stick, I'll consider the end of the age of the disk....until then companies like imore will see room for products like this one.
