Introducing the Core Grid Vigood U220....a netbook made of metal. Yes that's right, a steely netbook that is designed for Ironmen everywhere, this baby is designed to take hard knocks in its stride and sells for around 350 bucks.

We haven't seen anything quite like this since we covered the Full Metal jacketed MacBook Air clone a few months ago, so I suppose it's refreshing to see another shanzhai product pop up on the radar with a similarly robust metallic exterior. In fact as far as we can see from these images, the Vigood chassis appears to be at least half metal; the sports car red half is clearly metallic which is possible not true of the underside of the device which we suspect is good old fashioned plastic.

There are also suspicions that the Vigood would not be a great candidate for sitting in direct sunlight, such is the nature metal objects in the sun, and I haven't even mentioned concerns over how well Earthed the device is; I mean how do you ground a mobile device? Especially in China were I suspect many buildings may not have a bona-fide master ground bar? My concerns are probably without foundation, but anyone with a more informed clue than I can chip in below and belay my fears.

These concerns aside, technologically speaking what you're getting is very much standard netbook specs; Atom N270 (1.6Ghz) processors, Intel 945GSE motherboard chipset, 1G DDR2 RAM, a slightly larger 250GB 5400rpm hard drive with a 10.2 inch screen, 1.3 mega-pixel camera, built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi as you would expect.

Conclusions:

The Shanzhai continue to innovate on what is now a largely crowded and mostly unexciting area; the humble netbook. It might just be that offering a variety of options in the materials used in the chassis is one true way to differentiate and offer customers something different. There was the case of the bamboo netbook from Asus a few years ago, although in fairness it smacked of an eco-gimmick more than anything tangible. Perhaps, however we will see more choice of materials in Shanzhen-made PCs as time moves on.
