Malata-R108T-4
Veteran Shenzhen IT company Malata, rolled out a few notebook models last year, but is now increasing investment in product design and development of innovative netbook-type devices. The Malata R108T uses a new mold, looks to have very nice workmanship, and comes in a range of colors icluding Ferrari Red, Piano Black, Coffee, Gold and Champagne. And of course there’s the 10” rotating touch screen that allows the netbook to be used as a tablet.

The touch screen support has been nicely timed to coincide with the launch of Windows 7 and its new touch screen features. Unfortunately, there’s no horizontal to vertical display support so using it as an eReader-type device is somewhat hampered.

Good news for Chinese consumers: the R108T comes with Hanwang handwriting software making input of Chinese characters very convenient.

Western Opportunity Analysis:

Malata has so far focused only on the China market, but devices like the R108T could prove popular in the West, especially with its very versatile tablet/clamshell design.

Malata-R108T-3

Conclusions:

A bit pricier than most of the netbooks coming out of Shenzhen, but on the other hand Malata is a more established company with an accompanying increase in after-sales support. A nice looking, useful device and one of the first we’ve seen with MS’s new OS on it.

Nice device, though a bit difficult to market in Italy because of the name choice, which in my language means "sick"

I suspect if you order enough volumes they'll be happy to change the brand name for Italians! :)

This is a cool stuff. FYI, I want to share one similar great device here and maybe this could be a hit too in western countries.

Babiken UMPC PC729 or E729

URL: www.babikenshop.com/.../

Babiken PC729 is powered by windows XP and the manufacturer is also testing the windows 7 and in the near future, you can see this device will run with windows 7. When you have a chance to test it, you will see the touch screen is very responsive and surfing the web via WIFI is very and powerful. Though with CUP of VIA C7-M 772 Esther, 1.2G, L2 cache: 128KB, and 1GB DDR, it seems you have low end specs and it could influence the working speed, it does not. The device works as quickly as a regular PC.
