HP clone choices include leather and sequins

Here is the latest HP1000 cone from a shanzhai company called MOFI. These mini-notes are aimed at the fashion conscious, and are available in three varieties; leather, vogue and luxury. So regardless of whether you're into bondage, fashion catwalks or simple hedonism, MOFI has a mini-note for you.

HP first dipped their toe in netbook waters with their Mini 2133 offering and have not looked back since, launching a whole slew of attractively designed devices based on the now ubiquitous Intel atom platform. They offer reasonably good value as well-built mobile PCs that also feature an almost full sized keyboard, something that won over reviewers and consumers alike. These 10.1 inch screen offerings follow the netbook script to the letter as far as hardware goes (read: ATOM N270, 1GB DDR2, 160GB HDD etc) and retails (we think) in the sub 280 USD price range. We hope to have more details on price in the coming days.

Western Opportunity Analysis:

HP have also toyed with fancy designs, most notably with Vivian Tam's clam, a gaudy if overstated design that made some swoon and others shudder with revulsion. The shanzhai have done a reasonably good job with their efforts here. I'm not compelled to call the kitsch police just yet. In fact we're expecting the shanzhai, along with the major brands to offer increasingly customized netbook designs in the future as it's one sure way to differentiate. Expect them to as customizable as t-shirts within a year.

Conclusions:

I was a fan of HP's minis from the off. Their superior build-quality and larger keyboards also made an impact on the industry, proving that cheap didn't have to mean inferior. Although, I'm boring enough to demand mine in black (please no leather), I can see these hip fashionable versions doing good business. Not so sure about the gold or the sequins though to be honest, unless we're going after the rapper's girlfriend angle.Who knows, maybe that's a segment of millions on the Mainland.
