 …from breaking it. Earlier this year, Dell introduced its Latitude 2100 netbook, which is targeted at the education market where the ability to survive use and abuse is key. With its rugged, rubber-coated exterior, antimicrobial keyboard, and optional solid state drives it was meant to be able to handle everything even the most Ritalin-deprived 8 year old could throw at it. The netbook also attracted the attention of the shanzhai crowd, who have just come out with the ZC-A80. From manufacturer Zhongchi, the ZC-A80 adopts the same rubber outer but gets a bigger 11.1” screen and increased 1366x768 resolution. It also weighs in at a slightly lighter 1.2kg (compared to the Latitude’s 1.45kg).
On the downside, there’s no SSD, so the Shanzhai version’s not going to stand up to quite as much punishment. Specs Processor: 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 Memory: 1GB DDR2 HDD: 160GB Connectivity: 3 USB ports, VGA Western Opportunity Analysis: The education market is large and a popular target for vendors. Dell’s take on it with a ruggedized product clearly struck a chord with many and this Shnazhai version, with very similar specs should also do well. Conclusions:
We don’t have any pricing on this yet, but the ZC-A80 is in production and already has overseas supply channels established to distribute this in foreign markets. Could wind up in the US sooner rather than later.
