Here's seven inches of tablet for you to salivate over. Or do I mean MID or PMP? Either way you slice it, it's known as the SmartQ V7 and is produced by a Shenzhen-based company going by the name of SmartDevices. This baby sports a nice shiny touchscreen and can apparently handle your 1080p video needs with out breaking sweat. We like the sound of that, oh yes we do.

This is by no means the first attempt at such a device from SmartDevices, who consider themselves to leading the way in producing what folks in China call MIDs, or 'multimedia Internet devices'. I'm not sure however how Intel would feel about the V7 being called a MID, seeing as they basically created the device category as a moniker for their x86 Intel Atom-based handhelds, where as this guy is powered by an 600MHz ARM11 SoC.

Specs go something this; you get a 7" WVGA touchscreen, connectivity that includes WiFi (802.11 b/g) and bluetooth, all powered by a 4500mAH battery with 256MB of RAM, 2GB of inbuilt storage, and a microSD memory support for up to 32GB and (most unbelievable of all) support for a TV via HDMI!. Apparently the device can also receive the popular PPStream video service that is quickly gaining momentum in China.

Western Opportunity Analysis:

In terms of categorizing or pigeon holing I'm more in favor of calling this a tablet device, albeit a high-end one that can (apparently) do HD video. Which would be no mean feat. Doing 1080p video at decent bit rates in HD codecs like H.264 and VC1 is a not easy. In fact it can even make a full-blown desktop PC weak at the knees on occasion, so any ARM-based device that can pull tue HD video at 1080p has my immediate respect.

Conclusions:

The price is expected to be around 1500 RMB which is about 200 USD. There's no word on the operating system, although I'm kind of expecting the SmartDevices to have loaded the V7 with something of their own creating. It'd certainly be interesting to put this fella through its paces and see what level of software we're getting and just how well the HD video really plays.
