P88-1
We’ve written several times in the past on the rumors and stories floating around about a possible Apple tablet device. Apple themselves on their recent fourth-quarter earnings call helped to fuel the rumors by suggesting that they expected to see abnormal increases in Q1 2010 air freight costs that have “nothing to do with iPhone or iPod”. So, if a tablet is in the wings, what does it look like? Perhaps a little like this device from one of the bigger shanzhai players.

The P88 from Shenzhen Great Long Brother Industrial Co. is quite a simple design featuring a 10.2” 1024x600 touch screen. In a country where rumors and word of mouth are king, has someone at Great Long Bro. got early word on what the Apple device will look like? It wouldn’t be the first time a “clone” has appeared in China before the launch of the real product.

P88-2

A few specs…
CPU: Intel Atom 1.6GHz
RAM: 1GB
HD: 160GB
Weight: 1.03kg
Dimensions: 280×180×22mm
Ports: 3xUSB, VGA, RJ-45, card-reader, earphone, mic.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi, reserved 3G and GPS module space
Other: Metal bracket and stylus
Battery life: around 1.5hrs
Price: just under USD 440

P88-3

Western Opportunity Analysis:

There is a lot of conjecture that any Apple device coming out will be sporting the same 10.2” screen size as the P88. Apart from that, I can’t imagine a tablet device from Apple will look like this – too plain, too thick, too under-powered. With a battery life of only 1.5hrs (can that be right?) and a price tag of over USD 400, I can’t imagine people are going to be queuing outside stores to get their hands on this device in the West.

P88-4

P88-5

P88-6

Conclusions:

It’s by no means a terrible product, but at the end of the day I think most people would be shocked if it turned out this was an Apple tablet clone.

Great with video-out and USB2, but far too heavy. What is needed is a 400 g tablet that is pocketable with Mac inside.

So what do you think of the new Dell Streak then? Can you live with Android instead of Mac's iPhone OS?

Ha ha ha.. in a way I guess you're right... :)

...except for of course our Asian analysis, Op-eds, Freaky Friday and China Buzz stuff.. yeah... and the fact we try to take an ever so "slightly" deeper look at the products and their potential for Western consumers instead of just show off a KIRF item.

Chinese people demanding an enterprise for cloning? That's silly... Touch screens have been for a while in the market like tablet pcs but apple's approach is more refined and user friendly than just having Windows with touch capabilities.

Actually, Apple is the new China.

Their employees and bosses are copying whatever their visits to enterprises/fairs/trade shows yield. Nearly every design, hardware, software and even the commercials of Apple are rip-offs.

When a Chinese company does it, it's called plagiarism. When Apple does it, they're "inspired", and the respective products is called a "tribute" to whoever they stole the ideas from.

Seen this model here, and not impressed about it. Simply said. seen 30 or more different Windows tablet models in Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong and especially shenzhen. They are all light copies of HP's older tablet and have limited similarities with Apples Ipad.

Besides those models are only worth around 230-299$ but is sold at 499++

Sorry, but they are at best crappy like hell. The demo model of the P88 I had broke down and the sale guy got "pissed" at me, for "breaking" the touch pad - basically tried to open IE by double clicking on the icon, by lightly tapping on the screen.

IT is a DON'T BUY! besides there are no innovation in this here, all components are off the shelve components.

apples ipad cannot show you the internet. without flash you will be just pissed about.
no camera,no usb, no mulittasking. for what the hell i should buy this cripple?

even this chines product looks like a copy out of design of a iphone. it has usb, i can exchange music, i can probably make a skype call and see all flash websites. all these the superb apple is notable to show.

this is the point guys. apple is counting on the brainwasched iphone users. they will try selling apple apps till it will be killed by flash applications running on every other device.

as a flash developer i can create with flash something which will run on every other pc doesnt matter from wich company. who needs apple if android is becoming with google maps the big player.

are you kidding. the ipad will be the first big flow since ages for apple. jobs seems becoming to ignorant and good critics are hard to find about the ipad even on apple friendly blogs
