Taming the YEAR OF THE TIGER shanzhai style!
Because we cover quite a bit of China tech news we feel entitled to make Chinese New Year predictions on top of our Western New Year predictions we made earlier in December when we declared 2010 the year of the tablet.. until Apple renames it. Which they did… 2010 is now the year of the iPad, and everybody’s getting on board, and the Chinese will be no exception as we pointed out in our CHiPAD article.
Now in preperation for the venerable upcoming CNY holiday we take our predictions a step further.

Confucius Say: “Navi my students, you can be dismissed”
A few weeks ago, all major cinemas in China received a notice from the government to stop showing Avatar 2D version on the big screen.
The government claims that the Avatar 3D version will still be showing, only the 2D version will be removed, and since that Avatar 3D contributes 90% of the total income, it will have minimal impact towards the audiences.
Although the government won’t admit, but everyone knows that this was an act to protect the upcoming domestic Chinese movie “Confucius”.
This news was widely discussed in popular BBS forums such as Douban (豆瓣: www.douban.com) and Tianya (天涯: www.tianya.cn). Furthermore, many users even initiated the “Anti-Confucius movement” on these forums and got over 10,000 post feedbacks.
No matter how legitimate the reason was to remove Avatar 2D off the big screen, the accumulated anger of Chinese audience is on the verge of burst.
And because of the earlier dismiss of Avatar 2D movie, the audience shifted their anger towards Confucius and only gave an overall rating of 3 out of 10. Way below in domestic movie standard.
In my opinion, I think Confucius is a movie that is worth to watch, since he was a famous man and his thinking influenced the Chinese people for over 2 thousand years. But using such a obvious way to wipe out movie competitor shows no confident and quite below the belt.
This is such a pity.

Motor Vehicle World’s Shanzai King BYD (Build Your Dreams); originally was a battery manufacturer. In 2003, BYD purchased a car manufacturer located in Xi An and start manufacturing their own car. BYD proved that they can evolve their Shanzai spirit to the extreme. For example, their F3, F0, up to M6, S8 are all copied models of other car brands. Most of their ideas came from Toyota’s popular models.
Most new born industries are not really into copying everything from other industries. They learn and advanced themselves through copying their item, skills, and thinking. But they are also aware that they can’t do this forever.
However, in the case of BYD, they have successfully used this skill to open up their own market with their own brand. Even Warren Buffett has invested in BYD.
Because their products are too much alike when compare to the real ones, buyers, who have limited budget, would actually choose BYD since the C/P value is much higher and quality also stable.
Below, it’s the comparison between the famous BYD’s car and their copied model car:
