Shanzai Community, where frenzied fans of shanzhai frolic!
We think a community should be fun, AND useful. So we’re trying to create just that. A place where you can connect with anyone who is seriously interested in or just get’s a kick out wacky shanzhai stuff including even the shanzhai players/manufacturers themselves. For some it also might serve as an entertaining (but insightful) glimpse into Asian culture.
If you’re reading this, you’ve joined us at midway through step 1. Building and integrating the infrastructure of what in the end will be a very open, free and social database. Once that’s complete we’ll move to Step 2 by integrating the shanzai players and manufacturers…who by the way… from our meetings… want to contact you too… but since we’re against spam and other unsolicited contact… a more controlled and friendly environment like we’re creating might be just the right way to do it. We’re going to find out.
Follow along and join in when you like here. In the end, communities take the direction of their participants, so feel free to do so.

Last Saturday I walked into a BSNL office in Bangalore with one of my friends who was interested in getting Dataone broadband connection from BSNL. When we visited the office I was surprised to see a large crowed fighting to get free 3G SIM cards! I also saw some folks holding shanzhai smartphones in their hand and eagerly crawling into the queue to experience 3G.

The HP Slate is Hewlett Packard's answer to the iPad and looks so very similar to the Apple offering you'd almost expect them to have come off the same production line. The HP marketing machine has been on the offensive in the last few days, aiming its substantial arsenal squarely at the one clear and perceived weakness in the Apple iPad armor. i.e. flash support. But while HP execs ramp up their "full Internet experience" spin and poke fun at Apple, let's take a quiet and considered look at the HP Slate and ask, is it really so far off what were seeing coming out of China? Is it not essentially just another iPad clone?

I’m not sure 50’s that old these days, but never let it be said that the shanzhai manufacturers ignore any potential target market. With phones becoming increasingly complex and multi-functional, the ETS 50+ has been designed to cater to that portion of the mobile market with failing eye sight, poor dexterity and no interest in fancy features.

Many say the barons of Shenzhen are imitators, some think they are innovative, and millions of fans thank them for the cheap kit. No matter what shanzhai manufacturers are being called, they are proud of the way they do business. But would more shanzhai like to become legitimate entrepreneurs with no reliance on pirated software? That day is not too far away. A complete shift towards open source is the ultimate solution, one which won’t even void their ‘low-cost’ focus.

The annual World Mobile Congress (WMC) has been always characterized by frenzied activities from industry players, as well as media hysteria. This year was no exception, with major announcements and alliances that will have profound effects on the future of mobile usage grabbing the headlines.

In January, from the ‘TECHNOVATION’ at the ISA Vision Summit 2010 in Bangalore, shanzhai.com reported about a rotating fan which can display messages that are sent remotely from a USB dongle attached to a notebook. Now here is a digital clock which displays the time on/from a rotating hard drive!

Due to government regulations the Apple iPhone with Wi-Fi was not released for the Chinese market, but now, China Unicom, who has been solely selling the Apple iPhone in the country, is in talks with Apple to sell the Wi-Fi version, believing it’ll boost sales of genuine iPhones in China.
